In January of 2004 Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio signed an affiliation agreement with Equipped Kids founders Craig and Karen Kerr to take over day-to-day management of the Equipped Kids program. Sunshine became responsible for the Equipped Kids inventory, equipment loans, maintenance of the equipment and acceptance of donations.
One year later, Sunshine took over the program on a permanent basis and the Equipped Kids warehouse was relocated to the Sunshine main campus. Equipped Kids falls under the umbrella of Sunshine's Family Support Department, which provides services to families caring for their loved ones with disabilities at home.
Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio was founded in 1950 as Sunshine Children's Home by Roy and Georgette Engler, the parents of five children with developmental disabilities. Sunshine experienced rapid growth and by the late 1970s had branched out to provide residential services in the community. Today, Sunshine provides residential, vocational, respite and other services to nearly a 1,000 clients and their families in several counties. Sunshine is affiliated with the Mennonite Church and is member of the MHS Alliance.
